What make us good workers? Are you recognized as valuable and dependable member of your team? How do you handle the integrity in your workplace?
Integrity in the workplace is defined as: “consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcome.”
These main guidelines, should be set by the HR manager, the employer or the employees. Some people prefer standing by their own principles, but others might need some guidance. This is why one of the most valued skills by employers is self-awareness and pro-activity.
The following story is an example of how a bartender in a night club, found himself in strange position of taking certain decisions under his control. The staff received minimum pay, so the tips made their earnings. Consequently, the manager of the night club, thought this would be a good idea, for motivating his employees. His “motivational speech” consisted of few unenthusiastic words: “In this business is every man for himself, whatever you get for tip, you can keep, so be nice and work hard”.
The outcome of this speech was a disastrous scenario. The bartender was preparing the drinks slower than usual, so more people would come and order directly from the bar. The waiters were trying to be polite and friendly, but they came off too assertive. There were complaints by the customers unsatisfied with the service. Eventually everyone left the club and never came back. The staff became too competitive, so they turned against each other.
The bartender came up with the next solution. He made a deal with few of the waiters to make their drinks faster if they agree to split the tips. Many of them selfishly refused the offer, but soon enough they realized, that they are not making any tips at all. One by one, they all decided to put their tips together and split them equally at the end of the night.
It may not be the best example of integrity at the work place, but sometimes you should be able to work with what you can get to improve productivity and staff morale.
Whatever your work situation is, remind yourself that wasting time or resources will not only harm your employer, but eventually you too. Whether you decide to follow rules or to improvise, you should aim for achieving the best results. You can find out more examples of integrity in a workplace and use them to get your job done.
